About XRP
What is XRP?
XRP is a digital asset built for fast, low-cost international money transfers. Where Bitcoin prioritizes decentralization and store of value, XRP prioritizes settlement speed and efficiency. Transactions on the XRP Ledger settle in 3–5 seconds and cost a fraction of a cent.
Created by Ripple Labs in 2012, the XRP Ledger is a decentralized blockchain, though Ripple holds a significant portion of the total XRP supply. Financial institutions and payment providers use Ripple's technology to settle cross-border payments without pre-funded accounts in each country.
Investors buy XRP as an infrastructure play on the future of global payments, as a high-liquidity trading asset, or as a position on Ripple's expanding institutional partnerships.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is XRP a security?
In 2023, a U.S. court ruled that XRP sold on public exchanges is not a security. Direct institutional sales by Ripple were treated differently. Bitstop sells XRP through ATMs to retail buyers: the post-2023 framework treats this as a sale of a digital commodity.
Why do I need a 10 XRP minimum balance?
The XRP Ledger requires every active account to hold a small reserve (currently 10 XRP) to prevent network spam. If you're brand new to XRP, your wallet must receive at least this much before the account is 'activated' on-chain.
What's the difference between Ripple and XRP?
Ripple is the company. XRP is the cryptocurrency on the XRP Ledger. They're related (Ripple holds a lot of XRP and uses it in their products) but distinct: the network itself is decentralized.
How fast is an XRP transaction?
3 to 5 seconds, end to end. Compare to Bitcoin's 10–30 minutes for first confirmation. This speed is why XRP is used for cross-border payment settlement.
